A record label CEO holds the responsibility for a label's overall operations. These CEOs are the ones who make the final decisions and may have a label manager working beneath them; in smaller companies, one person can be the label manager and CEO. They are required to make high-level creative and business judgments about the company vision, strategy, administration and operations. Their choices impact the artists who are on their label's rosters
For each release, label managers create and implement an overarching schedule and budget. While the label's specialized employees focus in on their individual goals and tasks—creating the album's cover art, for example, or planning a press tour—the label manager's concern is always the big picture: creating a solid, economical product that represents the label well and releases on time. We're a small, independent label therefore, managers might be directly involved in almost every aspect of the label's releases.
A record company’s legal department is responsible for all the contracts that are made between the company and the artist. The label’s team of attorneys will draft the recording contracts and do the final negotiations with the artist’s manager or lawyer
The business affairs department handles finances, budget, payroll, and bookkeeping while the legal department’s responsibility is to handle contracts between the record label and the artists they have signed and to handle lawsuits
The artist development department may also be referred to as product development as the industry trends more toward building a product rather than just an artist. They are responsible for creating the brand of the artist ,
A&R are responsible for finding new talent to sign to the label, develop the artists creative and recording abilities, and oversee the entire production process.
The marketing department is responsible for the signed artists' marketing plan each artist is concentrated in certain music markets, such as rock, country, hip-hop, pop or a combination. Marketing representatives also track the sales of the label's products and report the numbers for the sales charts. Each artist is different, therefore every strategy will be different
